Ozaukee Talent Showcase to be Held in Random Lake, WI

Saturday August 7th 11am to 2pm at Christ Pond Retreat Center

[Grafton] [WI] [July 24, 2021] Ozaukee Talent welcomes you to an informal open house showcase of local talent on Saturday August 7 between 11 am and 2 pm.  Admission is free and open to the public.   Approximately 15 students (mostly youth) have volunteered to share their musical and acting talents at Christ Pond Retreat Center in Random Lake, WI with mostly family and friends.  Christ Pond Retreat Center is an events facility located on 100 acres of preserved Wisconsin land.  The address is N1599 State Hwy. 57 in Random Lake, WI.  Visit christpond.org for more information.

“The reason why I don’t use the word ‘recital’ is because a lot of people have preconceived ideas on what a recital is and the images that come to mind can tend to be negative.   I don’t believe in forcing anyone to perform who doesn’t want to.  I have seen that this can do more harm than good especially in a young child.  Families and guests are also free to come and go as they please.  The performance environment is comfortable and casual —Angie Mack, Ozaukee Talent founder and Musical Producer

Outdoor special guest performer will be longtime radio host Ben Merens.

Ben Merens is a storyteller and public speaker with a passion for listening. He is a veteran broadcaster and spent 21 years as a talk show host at Wisconsin Public Radio.

Today Ben provides stories for organizations and trains people in the art & science of effective, emotive storytelling.  He is the author of “People Are Dying To Be Heard” and “Uni-Tasking: 25 Tips For Better Listening.”  Ben is trained as a journalist and media professional. He has taught a variety of communications classes at colleges and universities in New York, Chicago and throughout Wisconsin.  For fun, Ben is an improvisational, acoustic guitar troubadour.

Ozaukee Talent was founded by Mack in February of 2016 after a bout with very early stage breast cancer and a two year medical leave from her usual teaching and directing duties through the North Shore Academy of the Arts (NSAA).  She is known by many families in Ozaukee County as a musical theater director who has been involved with producing and directing over 100 shows during the past 20 years.

Mack is also internationally known as a music educator, researcher and historian.  She has worked with many famous writers and playwrights, musicians, actors, producers and film directors from all over the world.  She introduced the music history concept for Grafton’s downtown Paramount Plaza and has served as the Chairperson for the International Walk of Fame Committee since 2006.

More about Mack in the media can be found at https://angiemackreilly.com/media/

Mack has a strong reputation of developing top notch talent.  Students of hers have become lead roles at various regional theaters and organizations such as The Milwaukee Repertory Theater, First Stage, The Fireside, Schauer Arts and Activities Center, The Cedarburg Performing Arts Center, Kids from Wisconsin and the Cedarburg Cultural Center

Most recently, Ozaukee Talent sponsored singer/songwriter Demetra Prochaska at the Youth Battle of the Bands competition at this year’s Gathering on the Green in Mequon, WI.

21 year old Prochaska won 3rd place and $1000 which should help her musical career get off to a good footing.

In order to help kick off the local holiday shopping season, Ozaukee Talent is proud to partner with the Cedar Creek Settlement to help provide live music for its shoppers.

The appeal of the Cedar Creek Settlement is that there is a smorgasbord of indoor specialty shops within close proximity.    The Guided Winery Tours and Wine Tasting are a favorite of both locals and visitors.   The historic building also offers unique artifacts that tell the story of the building.

The Cedar Creek Settlement is an active place to spend the afternoon and find unique gifts that help local small businesses.   The building provides a hub of activity that appeals to both men and women.

Make it a date!

Live music will begin at noon on Saturday November 17 just before #blackfriday

Of Mics and Men

Of Mics and Men is the acoustic guitar duo Bill Rotter and Peter Gohsman.  They’ve been together formally as a duo for only a short while. They met a few years ago playing guitar and have played a few private parties with close friends. What brought them together was their mutual appreciation of what the other brings to the music; they believe their collaboration results in better music than either could perform alone.    Bill plays lead guitar and sings; Peter sings lead and plays rhythm guitar.

One of Bill’s highlights involved playing bass in a band led by a schoolmate who went on to a career touring with a world famous musician and band.  Peter’s highlight is having one of his songs played on Milwaukee radio station WMSE.

They play a wide variety of recognizable songs, from artists such as Zac Brown, Van Morrison, David Grey, Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Bill Withers, The Allman Brothers, to name just a few.  Bill and Peter also write their own material and they might work an original or two into a set. Mostly though, they like to share their interpretations of songs that the audience will know and enjoy.

Alex Wilson Band at Buddy Guy's Legends

ALEX WILSON: You Can See Him Open for Buddy Guy or You Can See Him at the Cedarburg Cultural Center

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 14 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly (c) 1/5/17

“The first time I saw Buddy Guy was at his club in Chicago.  The thought that was most evident in my mind was that I was finally getting to see one of my heroes play guitar.  One who had inspired and played with so many of my other heroes.”  –Alex Wilson

It’s not everyday that a guitarist gets to open for a seven decade legend of the blues.  But a guitar master rolling through our quaint little Cedarburg, Wisconsin gets to do just that at Buddy Guy’s Legends on January 19th.

“I have never opened for him at his club so I’m excited to do that this coming January 19th!   It’s hard to explain in words what I’ve learned from Buddy musically, but it’s been  a lot.  I think we are going on at 7:30 to play for an hour before Buddy takes the stage with his band.  I’ve always wanted to open for him at his club and it took me many years of trying to finally land this slot.”  –Alex Wilson

But before he does that, Alex Wilson is going to rip it up in downtown Cedarburg tomorrow night.   Alex will be kicking off the Cedarburg Cultural Center’s Annual First Fridays series with his band on Friday January 6th starting at 6pm.

Anyone who is wise should crawl at the opportunity to see this guitar master in action (as well as get his autograph)!  The concert on Friday will provide the audience the rare opportunity to see up close and personal how this high powered “bluesman” wields his weapon, the guitar.

At an Ozaukee Talent blues guitar workshop just a few short months ago, Alex taught the students, “Always make everything you play percussive.  Listen to the Mosely’s.  Get the book, ‘12000 Chords’.  Alter your pick.”

Alex Wilson Blues Guitar Workshop Grafton WI

Blues guitarist Alex Wilson teaches workshop in Grafton, WI

Musicians teaching other musicians.  Musicians influencing other musicians whether in person or via recordings.  Musicians networking with other musicians.  This is a large part of the philosophy of Ozaukee Talent.

“Some of the stylings from his (Buddy Guy’s) early recording career are as much a part of the fabric of my playing as are those of BB King, Albert Collins or Jimi Hendrix.  I’ve met Buddy, but I never knew him so the only personal lessons I’ve ever learned from him are some of those evident in his music. There are perhaps other lessons I tried not to learn, but try or no, everybody lives their own blues.”
