Instructor:  Angie Mack Reilly, founder of Ozaukee Talent, email angie@ozaukeetalent.com  Angie Mack Reilly has been teaching music and drama to children in Ozaukee County for at least 15 years.  She uses a child-centered approach mixed with concepts used in the Kodaly, Reggio and Montessori methods.

Angie Mack Reilly Ozaukee Talent

Angie Mack Reilly is a musical director, performing artist, blues educator and writer who has a wealth of experience and connections in the arts and entertainment industry.  She is the founder of Ozaukee Talent and the co-founder of ParamountsHome, both headquartered in Grafton, WI.  Angie has been directing musicals, primarily for youth, for the past 18 years.  In addition, she gives private music lessons to all ages with an emphasis on piano, guitar, voice, acting, percussion and songwriting.   Her hobbies include composing music, writing poetry and gardening.  For more information, find Ozaukee Talent on facebook

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My ultimate goal as a teacher is to foster a lifetime of love for music in each student and to enjoy the process of learning.  Lessons should be something that the child looks forward to.  (Please communicate with me if they do not).  I try to tailor each lesson to the individual according to their learning style, learning speed, family dynamics and level of interest.  I use a “student-led” approach; meaning that I encourage each student to participate in the learning process through utilizing their ideas and things that interest them musically and otherwise.  I place a strong emphasis on innovative thought, individual thought and the creative process.  I also like to incorporate multi-disciplinary learning.  I believe that the process of learning music should be enjoyable.  Therefore, I do not believe in forcing youth to perform or compete musically.  I provide a safe environment where students are encouraged to take musical risks, make mistakes and are challenged to grow at their own pace and level creatively.

OZAUKEE TALENT REVIEW

September 20, 2016

by Angie Mack Reilly

I was pleasantly surprised by the level of talent that came out to the Ozaukee Talent 10-10-10 Open Mic on September 18th.  One of those pleasant surprises was a “daddy-daughter duo” that captured the hearts of the audience members.  The event was streamed live on Facebook for the first time as people from all over the world watched.

Going by the stage name “Robert Alan” or “Karmatic”, Robert is your average family guy who works at a machining company in Saukville and manages a busy household with his fiance in Grafton.  Robert is a producer and songwriter who graduated from Port Washington High School.  He is self-taught.

karmatic-album

When Robert has a few moments to himself, he works in his home recording studio intended for his creative projects.  One of those creative projects is his newest album, KARMATIC, which is a series of eleven hip-hop (or pop) songs that deal with the theme of family.

Robert and his daughter performed his original, “As I Watch You Grow” which is an endearing song about watching his children grow up.   In all honesty, it was one of the most precious performances that I have ever seen.   His daughter got all dressed up for the event and his fiance came out with young children in a stroller to support him.  Robert thanks his fiance “Lisa” for the “countless hours, days, weeks, months and eventually years” it took for him to produce the album.

The song, “As I Watch You Grow” begins with young children crying behind a synthesized drum beat.  The lyrics begin,

As I watch you grow

you’re everything that I’ve dreamed of

You look at me like I am so strong

So I’ll do all that I can….

The lyrics are authentically honest.  For example, he admits:

Discipline is a must, though

so I’m sorry if I yell

Just trying to do what is best for you

so you can excel

but sometimes all the stress gets the best of us all

I try to keep it together but then I fly off the wall

Robert’s lyrical style reminds me a little bit of Eminem.  Although I doubt that he will ever be as big as Eminem, I especially appreciate the lyrics, family-oriented themes and vocal melodies of his music.  This is his hobby.

Purchase a CD.  Help a hard-working, hip-hop songwriting dad out.  Hopefully he will perform again for the next Open Mic!

The next 10-10-10 Open Mic is Sunday November 6th from 4 to 6 pm.  Email angie@ozaukeetalent.com if you would like to perform a 10 minute set.  We will be Live Streaming again on Facebook.

Fresh Musical Talent Featured at 10-10-10 Open Mic

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 14, 2016

by Ozaukee Talent founder, Angie Mack Reilly angie@ozaukeetalent.com

On Sunday June 26 at 4pm, Ozaukee Talent will be hosting its first “10-10-10 Open Mic” at 1111 Broad Street in Grafton.  Ten acts will perform for ten minute each; giving the audience a sneak peak at fresh new local talent including “Hey Captain Knight” from this YouTube video.

Event coordinator, Angie Mack Reilly, is an internationally known Paramount Records educator who thinks that Grafton, WI needs to have a strong music scene.  “Many people don’t realize that the music recorded in Grafton, WI in the 1920s and 30s  just won a 2016 Grammy Award.  Jack White’s music preservation project, ‘The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records Volume 2’ competed against compilation projects by the Grateful Dead and Rolling Stones.”

Mack Reilly has met tourists from Russia, France, Japan, The United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, New York City and more who have come to Grafton to check out the music scene.  “Grafton needs a music scene.  Period.  The world is watching.  I am hoping to drag the talented musicians that I know are in this area out of the woodwork.  It has been my experience with 18 years in the music industry that musicians can often struggle with things like confidence and promoting themselves.  As a long-time music director and teacher, it is my passion to help draw some of these musicians out.  I am expecting quite an eclectic mix of musical genres at this first open mic.  I believe that the audience is in for a big surprise.”

This open mic is the first in a series of many  coming to Grafton.  Tickets cost $10 each and can be purchased online through the Ozaukee Talent website.  The next “10-10-10 Open Mic” is scheduled for 4pm on July 24th.  The event will also coincide with a free Open Drum Circle for anyone to partake in.  Other upcoming events hosted by Ozaukee Talent include a guitar workshop with Alex Wilson and a vocal workshop with Rhonda Zolecki.  People interested in performing at the next open mic should contact Ozaukee Talent at 262.309.4112.

Guitar Lessons for Kids

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

By Angie Mack Reilly

little boy guitar

I often get asked what a good age is to start learning the guitar.  My initial answer would be when the child shows interest.

On average, I would say that between the age of 8 and 10 is an early starting point.  Playing the guitar takes a certain hand dexterity that tends to be difficult for children who are younger than that.  However, I have taught younger children.  It all depends on the child and how badly they want to play.  Playing the guitar can also be a little painful at first.  It requires pushing down hard on the strings and sometimes tiny fingers don’t like that.  If the child is younger, I like to recommend a music exploration lesson that combines a little bit of guitar time with a little bit of piano, singing and/or drum.

First of all, you need to get a guitar that is child-sized.  HERE IS A SAMPLE starter kit that I would recommend if you don’t know much about guitars.

Next, we would need to set up 1/2 hour lesson slot that works with both of our schedules.  Lessons are once a week and the commitment is per semester (FALL Sept-Dec, WINTER/SPRING Jan-Apr, SUMMER May-August)  I accept major credit cards, cash or check.  Please contact me if you would like to find out which time slots are currently available.  CONTACT angie@ozaukeetalent.com  Lessons are held at 1111 Broad Street in Grafton.

Moving “Back Home” May 1st!

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 50 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly

I remember receiving a program booklet of NSAA classes in the mail in 2005. At the time, I had been a K-8 Music Teacher at a private school. I remember thinking, “What a great opportunity for youth to have!” (I wish there was an arts school around me growing up!)

I took my music students on a field trip. We went to go see NSAA’s production at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center. It was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. (Recalling that show makes me smile even now.) Josh Pope was Joseph. I absolutely fell in love. I went to every show they put on that weekend. I felt like I was at “home”.

I then emailed the founder, Sheri Bestor, to compliment them on their programs. I explained that I was a K-8 Music Teacher. I asked if there was anything I could do to help their organization. Oddly, they were about to do a musical production and needed a Music Director. Sheri asked if I could be the Music Director. (I have been the Music Director for so many shows now that I forget which one was my first…..perhaps Seussical?) She also asked if I could teach a few private lessons after school so I did.

My private lessons grew so much that I ended up leaving my K-8 position to work for NSAA.

Before the recession hit, NSAA was doing two major Stagekids Productions and three Jr. Stagekids programs per year. On top of being the Music Director for their Stagekids Productions, I became the Producer/Director for the Jr. Stagekids Programs. Add to that multiple music and drama classes that I was teaching each week combined with scores of private music students. I also traveled to other facilities to direct and teach as an NSAA staff member. I was one busy gal and having the time of my life!

I was able to raise my income level and become a first-time homebuyer.   Serendipitously, the house that I fell in love with was one block south of NSAA. I took up my new residence.

Then, the recession hit NSAA pretty hard as it did other arts organizations.

In 2007, I stepped in and became their Marketing Director, putting in more volunteer time than paid time just to help the organization stay afloat the best that I could. I remained their Marketing Director until 2012 when I went through some medical issues. At the time, I had over 40 private music students per week on top of directing and teaching.

I had to take some time off of doing what I loved so that I could heal and recover. I took on a position with another company so that I could work from home for two years.

But I really, really, really missed directing, teaching and working with youth!!!!!

When my health improved, I decided to return to NSAA and take on a few more private lessons.

The health issues that I went through made me consider quality of life issues. I realized how much I loved working with children in the arts and how comforting it was for me to be in the NSAA building. But during the course of me being gone, some transitions occurred and there wasn’t room for me to be employed like I once was.

So I decided to become an NSAA Affiliate.

On May 1st, I will be moving into the NSAA building as the owner of OZAUKEE TALENT. I will basically be doing what I have been doing for all of these years; giving private lessons, teaching arts classes, putting on music events, helping businesses with marketing and more. My “Musical Learning Lab and Interactive Classroom” will be on the 3rd floor perpendicular to the dance studio where the Trinity Irish Dancers rehearse.

I AM SO EXCITED and nothing could feel more natural and “right” for me to be doing right now.

I am thankful for this opportunity.

And I am especially thankful to Sheri Bestor for starting NSAA, hiring me, and now for allowing me to be an affiliate.

This is my passion.

This is my dream.

This is what I do best.

Thank you NSAA. Thank you Sheri. Thank you Paula. Thank you Debbie. And Scott. Martin. And those who have served on the NSAA Board over the years. And the parents. And the businesses.

Arts education is vital and integral to the health and growth of our community. Thank you for your support.  Ahhhhhh, “There’s No Place Like Home!”

Hands-On Music Enrichment

Purple Polka Dots, Star Shower Lights & a Disco Ball

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 4 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly

Contact:  angie@ozaukeetalent.com

My current private music students and I are extremely excited to be moving into our Music Lab May 1st!  In the ABOUT section of this site, I mentioned that this is going to be an organic process that I will document along the way.

As a longtime performing artist, it has been highly customary for me to collaborate with other creatives.  For me, this has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the creative process.  Whether it’s a team of us putting on a musical or a team of us performing music together, I find creative collaboration to be one of the most exciting aspects in my line of work.  Gathering a group of creatives together to brainstorm is truly one of my favorite passions!

In thinking about the design for the Music Lab, who better to design it but music lovers themselves?

So I began asking some of my current students, “What do you think would make a really cool Music Lab?”  We all agree that we MUST have a disco ball!  I LOVE it!  Collaboration from the “get go”!

The first answer that I got was, “We should have a slide that you can slide down if you sing a note right!”  I wasn’t expecting such a random answer, but then again, this is how the creative mind thinks.  She also wants us to project Star Shower Laser Lights in the room.  How cool would that be??

Another student of mine loves playing the computer developing game SimCity and has been spending time drawing plans for me complete with the color scheme for the room.  She thinks that we need to have the room green because it is calming and reviving.  She would like to see purple polka dotted chairs, lime green Chinese lanterns, project tables, orange accents and a mini refrigerator with water to name few.

Music Lab Design

And gadgets.  We  NEED gadgets.  And noise makers of all kinds!  We could really use some donations in these areas!  What do you have laying around??

I have also been given great ideas from some of my adult musician friends that include “BUILD A GUITAR” workshops and a way to tie learning about the environment into learning about music.  My local musician friends are very passionate about the environment!  More brainstorming to be done.

Right now, I am in the process of gathering ideas.  You see, this isn’t “ALL ABOUT ME” Music Lab.  No.  This is about a space that creatives of all ages  feel comfortable exploring in, participating in and creating dreams in!

So bring on the purple polka dots, Star Shower Laser Lights and disco ball!

And PLEASE, if you have anything laying around that you think we could use, please contact me right away!  Recycling used and unwanted items is all a part of the vision!
