I cannot tell you how THRILLED I am to have a former student of mine, Stephanie Erin Brill, as a piano and songwriting instructor for the 2017 OZAUKEE TALENT SUMMER SESSION!

Stephanie began piano and songwriting lessons with me at the age of 9 and continued until she released her first album as a 13 year old.  The rest is history.  And it’s history in the making!

Stephanie has created an outstanding legacy at such a young age.  You might have seen her as the emcee for the Cedarburg Cultural Center’s Blueburg Cafe or performing at Cedarburg’s Strawberry Fest or Summerfest for that matter!   This gal isn’t stopping anytime soon!  She has a full summer line-up of performing gigs and is excited to be a part of Cedarburg’s Summer Sounds crew this season.

Stephanie will be teaching both youth and adults for the summer session which will be starting up soon.

To book a lesson slot with Stephanie for this summer, please visit OZAUKEE TALENT REGISTRATION for available time slots.

Ozaukee Talent is pleased to be offering internships during the summer of 2017. Internships provide one on one training in a real life setting for those wanting to succeed in music-related fields.  Contact angie@ozaukeetalent.com

I often say, “In the entertainment industry, it’s not what you know but WHO you know.” Stephanie Erin Brill is someone to know.

If you LIKE the idea of a local, female-led business willing to INVEST IN and PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES for youth, please consider DONATING a TAX DEDUCTIBLE gift to OZAUKEE TALENT.  Your dollars will be put to good use.  angie@ozaukeetalent.com

Guitar Lessons for Kids

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

By Angie Mack Reilly

little boy guitar

I often get asked what a good age is to start learning the guitar.  My initial answer would be when the child shows interest.

On average, I would say that between the age of 8 and 10 is an early starting point.  Playing the guitar takes a certain hand dexterity that tends to be difficult for children who are younger than that.  However, I have taught younger children.  It all depends on the child and how badly they want to play.  Playing the guitar can also be a little painful at first.  It requires pushing down hard on the strings and sometimes tiny fingers don’t like that.  If the child is younger, I like to recommend a music exploration lesson that combines a little bit of guitar time with a little bit of piano, singing and/or drum.

First of all, you need to get a guitar that is child-sized.  HERE IS A SAMPLE starter kit that I would recommend if you don’t know much about guitars.

Next, we would need to set up 1/2 hour lesson slot that works with both of our schedules.  Lessons are once a week and the commitment is per semester (FALL Sept-Dec, WINTER/SPRING Jan-Apr, SUMMER May-August)  I accept major credit cards, cash or check.  Please contact me if you would like to find out which time slots are currently available.  CONTACT angie@ozaukeetalent.com  Lessons are held at 1111 Broad Street in Grafton.

Meet Female Composer Shannon

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly

The video below says it all.  Shannon and I go way back from when she was in grade school at a small private school in Saukville, WI.

Shannon wanted to learn how to play the piano.  “Young Shannon” seemed extremely eager to play……more than most of the other students  I have met.  Taking her lead and capturing that moment of her intrigue with the piano, I started teaching her piano theory and before we knew it, she was improvising and playing.  She caught on very quickly and practiced often on her own initiative.

Shannon and I parted ways, as most teachers and students do.  However, we were able to connect again when she got older (as a lot of my former students and I do).

She began sharing some of her original compositions with me.  I was struck by how raw they were.  She played piano with such a fierceness that I hadn’t seen in any other female other than myself.  All that I can say is authentic passion. WOW!

I love empowering young people to express themselves!  It’s a skill that ends up sticking with them for the rest of their lives!

One of my favorite things to teach is songwriting and composing.  Why just PLAY a song when you can CREATE the song?
