how grandma taught me how to love music

Grandma’s Greatest Gift

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 2 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly (c) 12/3/16

“Grandma, can I play your organ?”

When I was a child, anything musical was like a magnet for me.    This included my grandparents’ organ which sat in their dining room.  Whenever I went to their house,  I could hear those colorful FOX TROT , STRINGS, SWING, and TRUMPET buttons calling my name.

There were many things at “Grandma’s house” that us grand kids could not touch; her Avon cologne bottle collection, ceramic figurines and more.  But the organ?  Grandma let ME touch that.  I felt special every time she said,

“of course you can play the organ honey”.

I heard another all too familiar story this week from one of my piano students about how the music teacher at school gets angry when the children touch the instruments in the classroom.    It is because of stories like this that I decided to open up an “Open Music Lab” where children are free to touch the instruments, explore sounds and make some noise without “getting in trouble”.   In fact, just last night, I was with my Ozaukee Talent Performers and one of the young gals said, “You are really nice.  You’re like, ‘make yourself at home’!”   The girls and I had a great time singing, dancing and playing instruments in the room to their favorite songs.

My music lab IS like my home.  And when children “come over”, I like to treat them how Grandma treated me whenever I came over.

Not only did she let me touch her organ, but she listened to me.  I mean REALLY LISTENED to me.  She looked me in the eyes and got down to my level.  I remember how important I felt.  She wasn’t rushed like so many parents of multi-children families are.  She didn’t treat me like I was a nuisance.  She would say things like, “Oh, that’s wonderful honey”  making me feel so important.

I remember confessing to her one time that I loved the children’s PBS show, Sesame Street.  As she sat in her kitchen chair watching the program with me she said, “You know what?  I love Sesame Street, too, Angela”.  Wow!  A grandma who understood me!  It felt so good to feel understood.

Each week, I get the privilege of spending a half hour or an hour with each of my piano, guitar and vocal students.  If they ask to touch the instruments in my room, I let them. Never underestimate how much impact a child’s curiosity can have on their learning!

I look them in the eyes.  I smile when they are talking so that they know I value what they have to say.    I remember what it was like to want to be listened to as a child.  Grandparents are great listeners.

My grandma has since passed.  But everyday that I am in my music studio, I think about her and all of the wonderful lessons she taught me, music she shared with me, faith and love she gave to me.  I treat my students like grandma treated me.  I like to think of my music lab as like “going to grandma’s house”.

So, the greatest gift that “Grandma Gladys” gave me was the gift of how to treat and inspire a child.   Our moments together were relatively few.  Oh, but how they left an impression!

Here’s to all of the grandmas this holiday season!  Remember, it’s the little things that mean the most.  Slow down.  Listen.  Look them in the eyes.  Let them explore.

Angie Mack Reilly Ozaukee Talent

Angie Mack Reilly is a musical director, performing artist, blues educator and writer who has a wealth of experience and connections in the arts and entertainment industry.  She is the founder of Ozaukee Talent and the co-founder of ParamountsHome, both headquartered in Grafton, WI.  Angie has been directing musicals, primarily for youth, for the past 18 years.  In addition, she gives private music lessons to all ages with an emphasis on piano, guitar, voice, acting, percussion and songwriting.   Her hobbies include composing music, writing poetry and gardening.  For more information, find Ozaukee Talent on facebook

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My ultimate goal as a teacher is to foster a lifetime of love for music in each student and to enjoy the process of learning.  Lessons should be something that the child looks forward to.  (Please communicate with me if they do not).  I try to tailor each lesson to the individual according to their learning style, learning speed, family dynamics and level of interest.  I use a “student-led” approach; meaning that I encourage each student to participate in the learning process through utilizing their ideas and things that interest them musically and otherwise.  I place a strong emphasis on innovative thought, individual thought and the creative process.  I also like to incorporate multi-disciplinary learning.  I believe that the process of learning music should be enjoyable.  Therefore, I do not believe in forcing youth to perform or compete musically.  I provide a safe environment where students are encouraged to take musical risks, make mistakes and are challenged to grow at their own pace and level creatively.

Why a Music Lab?

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 13 Second

By Angie Mack Reilly

Composers invent.

I am  a composer.

I am an entrepreneur and a visionary.

I am a producer and director.

I believe that NOW is a prime time for innovation.  People are losing faith in the systems that they have trusted in for decades.  We are discovering each day that the food industry might not have our best interests in mind.  We are realizing that the pharmaceutical  industry profits when we are ill.  We are seeing that the political industry is  interested in being a circus of entertainment.  We realize that the media has its own biases.  We cannot even trust the news.  Big profiting CEO’s make us skeptical about the usefulness of capitalism.   We  question whether our education system is maximizing its potential to shape young minds.

Dissatisfaction leads to the need for change.

Change comes through innovation.

innovation

As a long-time private music instructor, I have adapted my teaching style to be a Student-led and Montessori-style approach combined with “outside of the box” methods.

In short, I believe that we need to facilitate environments that encourage independent thought.  We need learning environments that are exploratory and without time constraints.  We need classrooms of exploration and experimentation.  We need to encourage young minds to come up with their own hypothesis and to test that hypothesis.  We need a learning environment that is multidisciplinary and stimulating as well as comfortable to work in.

When given the right opportunity, our youth are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.  I have witnessed, first-hand for about 18 years, that many children are far more advanced musically than we realize.  I believe in tailoring my teaching style to each individual.  People learn differently.  People learn at different speeds.

I have a 6 year old student that I am teaching college level music theory to right now.  Why?  Because, believe it or not, that is where her knowledge base is at.  A former student of mine recorded her own original album at age 14.

I have so many testimonies like this.  This is because there is musical talent out there that isn’t receiving enough learning in a traditional music classroom.  There is so much more potential for creative innovation in our youth than we realize.

Hence, the Ozaukee Talent Music Lab.  A place for exploration, experimentation and innovation.  A place for creation and composition.

I am currently looking for businesses willing to back this type of venture.  I am looking for parents who have resonating thoughts about teaching our youth to be innovative.  Finally, I am looking for creative minds with ideas looking for collaboration.

Let’s talk.  angie@ozaukeetalent.com

Hands-On Music Enrichment

Purple Polka Dots, Star Shower Lights & a Disco Ball

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 4 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly

Contact:  angie@ozaukeetalent.com

My current private music students and I are extremely excited to be moving into our Music Lab May 1st!  In the ABOUT section of this site, I mentioned that this is going to be an organic process that I will document along the way.

As a longtime performing artist, it has been highly customary for me to collaborate with other creatives.  For me, this has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the creative process.  Whether it’s a team of us putting on a musical or a team of us performing music together, I find creative collaboration to be one of the most exciting aspects in my line of work.  Gathering a group of creatives together to brainstorm is truly one of my favorite passions!

In thinking about the design for the Music Lab, who better to design it but music lovers themselves?

So I began asking some of my current students, “What do you think would make a really cool Music Lab?”  We all agree that we MUST have a disco ball!  I LOVE it!  Collaboration from the “get go”!

The first answer that I got was, “We should have a slide that you can slide down if you sing a note right!”  I wasn’t expecting such a random answer, but then again, this is how the creative mind thinks.  She also wants us to project Star Shower Laser Lights in the room.  How cool would that be??

Another student of mine loves playing the computer developing game SimCity and has been spending time drawing plans for me complete with the color scheme for the room.  She thinks that we need to have the room green because it is calming and reviving.  She would like to see purple polka dotted chairs, lime green Chinese lanterns, project tables, orange accents and a mini refrigerator with water to name few.

Music Lab Design

And gadgets.  We  NEED gadgets.  And noise makers of all kinds!  We could really use some donations in these areas!  What do you have laying around??

I have also been given great ideas from some of my adult musician friends that include “BUILD A GUITAR” workshops and a way to tie learning about the environment into learning about music.  My local musician friends are very passionate about the environment!  More brainstorming to be done.

Right now, I am in the process of gathering ideas.  You see, this isn’t “ALL ABOUT ME” Music Lab.  No.  This is about a space that creatives of all ages  feel comfortable exploring in, participating in and creating dreams in!

So bring on the purple polka dots, Star Shower Laser Lights and disco ball!

And PLEASE, if you have anything laying around that you think we could use, please contact me right away!  Recycling used and unwanted items is all a part of the vision!

Google Announces Chrome Music Lab

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

by Angie Mack Reilly

Musician, Producer and Founder of Ozaukee Talent

Online music tools are an excellent way to help children become curious about music concepts.  With more and more children having access to technology, I am pleased that Google has created the Chrome Music Lab for curious minds of all ages to learn musical concepts using smart phones, iPads, computers and other devices.

The basic concept with this online learning tool is to visually show the correlation between music and sound waves.

My personal favorite experiment within the lab is the KANDINSKY EXPERIMENT where you can “draw” various lines of different sizes and shapes and then HIT PLAY to see and hear how those lines would sound.

Also fun is the VOICE SPINNER which allows you to record your voice into your device’s microphone and visually watch it spin.

This new technology fits in with my personal beliefs on music education.  It should be interactive, fun, and allow for the student to incorporate their own creative ideas.  When I teach children and teens how to play the piano, sing, play guitar and write music, I try to incorporate the ideas that they have.  Let’s say that a child loves playing Mario Brothers music games.  Then we learn how to play some of the theme songs on the piano.  Or let’s say that a student comes up with a musical idea on the piano.  Then we look at ways to expand that musical thought.

Learning should set the stage for a lifetime of love for music.

Be sure to mark the new online CHROME MUSIC LAB as a favorite!

Email angie@ozaukeetalent.com for information on private music instruction.  NOW RESERVING SLOTS FOR SUMMER.
